Malawi, Africa

Meaning 'Flame of Fire' from the reflection of the sun on the waters of beautiful Lake Malawi, Malawi is known as "the warm heart of Africa" because of the friendly and peace loving nature of the people. Landlocked, it is located in southeast Africa between Zambia (West) Tanzania (North East) and Mozambique (East and South and South West).

The lack of natural resources [Paladin (Africa) Ltd's new Kayelekera project is bringing new light to the far north of the country - www.paladinenergy.com.au] and limited land for large-scale farming has resulted in Malawi becoming one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. 80-90% of Malawi's 12.8 million people are subsistence farmers living on the land. 65% earn less than 1US$/day. Life expectancy is only 41 years, partly resulting from very high rates of maternal and neo-natal deaths. Illiteracy rates in over 15's are 42% overall, with males at 27% and females 57%. There are over 1 million orphans in the country.

Primary school education is compulsory and free (no fees but the children have to provide their own writing materials) in Government Schools in Malawi. Pre-Primary and post-Primary education is not free and is the focus for Transhaven Schools Projects. However, at the beginning of 2008 we started Primary level studies for those completing their TSP pre-Primary schooling as many could not provide the school uniforms and materials needed at the local Government Primary School.
